Evans Family of Jackson County Alabama

Compiled by James B. Hartline*

The earliest ancestor we have found in this Evans line is:

Emanuel Evans, born about 1750, married about 1770 to Elizabeth Thacker born September 12, 1736 in Goochland, Virginia, a daughter of William Thacker, Jr. (1735) and wife Mary Evans.

Their Children:

Hastings Evans, born 1766 in Louisa County, Virginia; died after 1860 in Logan County, West Virginia.

Shelton Evans, born after 1772 in Virginia

Nancy Evans, born after 1773 in Virginia.

Obediah Evans, born after 1776 in Virginia.

John Evans, born about 1778, in Virginia.

Tarlton Evans, born about 1778 in Virginia.

Grenberry Evans, born about 1785 in Virginia.

      William Wilkerson Evans.

Emanuel died after 1820 in Scott County, Virginia.

Elizabeth (Thacker) Evans died about 1820 in Scott County, Virginia.

Tarlton Evans was born before 1775,(2) the son of Emanuel and Elizabeth (Thacker) Evans.  In 1810, he was living in Washington County, Virginia.  He married Susannah Pace Bellomy, the widow of Jackson Bellomy. (3) She was born in 1781, the daughter of William and Mary Pace, in Fluvanna County, Virginia. (4) Susannah's father, William Pace, was one of George Washington’s “life guards”.

From the marriage of Jackson and Mary (Pace) Bellomy was born a son:

William Bellomy, born in 1805 in Virginia, married Malinda Wininger, daughter of David         Wininger. The exact date of Jackson Bellomy’s death is not known.  William was the progenitor of many of our Bellamy and Bellomy relatives.

Tarlton Evans lived in Scott County, VA from about 1815-1820.  We do not know the exact date of his marriage to Susannah but a good guess would be around 1806. (5)

Tarlton and Susannah had the following children:

      Malinda Evans

      Susannah Evans

Lewis Evans, born January 20, 1811, Scott County, Virginia.

Elizabeth Evans, born 1814, in Virginia, married Solomon Wininger, brother of Malinda Wininger.

Claborn Evans, born 1817, in Scott County, Virginia.

      Frances Evans

      Nancy Evans

We do not know the exact date of Tarlton Evans' death.  There is a gravestone in New Liberty Cemetery in Jackson County, Alabama, next to Susannah Evans that gives dates (years), however it was erected there in recent years and we do not know where the information of the years came from. At this time, I have no proof that he ever came to Jackson County.

Comments from Annie Berry Evans Hartline, from a letter to one of her cousins:

There are a lot of things I have been told by my Dad that are true about our Evans Family that I might be able to tell you some other time if you are interested:  I know exactly where the Evans farm is where our Great-Great-Grandmother Susan and her son Louis (Lewis) built after entering the land near Tupelo.  It was called the Evans farm a long time, I don’t really know how long.  The old log cabin has been torn down, another home sits in its place.  My first cousin on mother’s side of the family lives there now.  I have a black and white picture of the Evans log cabin home.  It was taken from the back of the house.  I don't know why, I wish they had taken one from the front.  I have been in this home when I was a teenager.  I didn’t know, then, how important it was, the very home place where our great-grandparents were born and raised.  The Evans name is a very outstanding name and has been down through the years.  It is name of people who were good, honest, law abiding citizens.  They were Christian people who kept the banner of truth waving high.  Oh, I was about to forget to give you information about that special one, Elizabeth Evans. . . the sister of our great-granddad Louis (Lewis) and Claiborn Evans.  This Elizabeth Evans, daughter of Susan Evans.  Elizabeth Evans, born 1815, married Solomon Wininger after his first wife Martha Potter died.  Children: Fannie, Malissa and Geneva (Gents) Wininger.
